ACM History

The First Society in Computing

ACM, founded in 1947, is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering, and application of information technology, serving both professional and public interests by fostering the open interchange of information and by promoting the highest professional and ethical standards.

The Missouri University of Science and Technology Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery was organized in 1962 and was the second student
chapter in the United States. MST-ACM has since had an extremely successful history, with our programming teams consistently achieving high rankings at competitions, and our student meetings drawing the interest of students in many different majors.

Meetings have included presentations from MST graduates on life in the real world, presentations from current students on work-study, co-op, and various aspects of computers including (recently) Java, ray-tracing, the World-Wide Web, and system administration.

The MST-ACM regularly sponsors contests and activities such as a Web scavenger hunt, net-gaming competitions, and volleyball games. MST-ACM also maintains it’s own computer system, with accounts available for research and projects not supported by standard campus systems.

The interests of our members are highly diverse, it’s fairly guaranteed that if you have a question about programming, system administration, software, or any other aspect of computers, one of our members will be able to answer it. If you’re looking for programmers for a group project, or someone to help with setting up an aspect of your personal computer system, one of our members can probably help.

Everyone is welcome at our meetings, whether you’re a member or not, although depending on the content of the meeting there may be a small charge for non-members to defray the cost of refreshments. Our meetings are held every other Thursday in the Computer Science building.
